: This paper analyzes and compares two carrier-based zero-sequence pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods, Double-Zero-Sequence (DZS) PWM and Common-Zero-Sequence (CZS) PWM, for dual-motor drives fed by a five-leg voltage-source inverter (FLVSI). Although both methods use offset-voltage injection to expand the linear modulation range and reduce output-voltage harmonics, their performance depends on the phase difference between the voltage vectors of each motor. To compare the two methods, the linear modulation ranges are derived based on the pole-voltage references of each method. In addition, the zero-vector dwell-time allocation is analyzed with respect to the phase difference. The analysis shows that CZS PWM provides a wider linear modulation range and lower output-voltage harmonics than DZS PWM at small phase differences. However, as the phase difference increases, the modulation characteristics of the two methods become comparable.
